NBA Celtics Basketball
When it comes to the best teams in the NBA Celtics basketball has one of the finest legacies of all time. The Celtics were founded by Walker Brown in 1946. At the time, they were a member club of the Basketball Association of America. John "Honey" Russell was hired as the team's first coach, and the Celtics player their first home game on November 5 of that year. The Chicago Stags served as the opposition that evening, beating Boston by the score of 57-55 in front of more than 4,300 fans. In addition to being the first home game is Celtics history, the contest also marked the first time a backboard had been broken at a professional basketball game. Prior to the game, Chuck Connors of the Celtics accomplished the feat by dunking during warm-ups. The game was delayed by over an hour as a result.
NBA Celtics Basketball: After The Merger
Just before the 1949-50 season, the Basketball Association of America agreed to merge with the National Basketball League to form a new league, the National Basketball Association, and the era of NBA Celtics basketball officially began. Boston went just 22-46 in their first season in the new league, but soon their fortunes would change. Boston acquired Bill Russell in 1956 and won their first NBA title that year. They returned to the finals in 1957, losing to the St. Louis Hawks, but the season afterwards they began a run of eight consecutive titles. They would go on to win an NBA record 16 championships and a whopping 71% of their home games. In fact, in 2005, the Celtics will in all likelihood surpass the 1,500 all-time home victory plateau. They need just two more wins to do so.
